Let’s face it, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who said they were happy with the amount of sleep they were getting. But, most of us are too stressed or busy to devote the necessary amount of time to getting enough sleep. However, not getting enough sleep is detrimental to your happiness, health and life expectancy. Here are 5 reasons you should spend more time sleeping!
Sleep Can Help Control Weight
Studies have shown that short-term sleep deprivation can lead to weight gain. First, a lack of sleep is known to reduce the speed of your metabolism. A slower metabolism can make it more difficult for your body to convert the food and liquid you put in it into energy, resulting in possible weight gain. Additionally, there is evidence suggesting that sleep deprivation leads people to crave high-calorie, high-carb foods which can severely increase a person’s propensity to gain weight.
Beauty Sleep is Not a Myth
Yes, beauty sleep is real! A lack of sleep can not only make you less healthy but it can make you less beautiful. A lack of sleep can cause your blood vessels to dilate resulting in the tired, dark circles that you may see especially under your eyes. Getting a good nights sleep will have you feeling refreshed and will give your skin a natural and healthy glow. Don’t worry if you are late to the party, skin heals rather quickly so by starting a new sleep regimen you can get your skin back to beautiful in no time!
Sleep Will Improve Your Mind
We’ve already seen how sleep helps with your weight loss and beauty, but in addition to physical, sleep can greatly improve your psychological health. The study between the mind and sleep is still relatively young, but the results that have been found so far say that there is a direct correlation between lack of sleep and inability to focus and retain information. If you’ve ever had a bad nights sleep then you probably remember how groggy and how hard it was for you to concentrate the next day. Additionally, there is a study published in the journal SLEEP that suggest a lack of sleep can lead to loss of brain tissue.
So the next time you have a big test to prepare for, do not spend the entire night preceding the test studying. That lack of sleep will make it more difficult for you to concentrate and pass the test!
Sleep Will Help Prevent Diseases and Illnesses
The most important reason to get more sleep is that it will make you infinitely healthier. A lack of sleep is directly linked to the following illnesses and diseases:
- Heart disease
- Cold and Flu
- many others..
A lack of sleep will weaken your immune system making you more susceptible to illnesses and less able to fight off bad toxins. Additionally, studies have found a link to sleep deprivation and increased blood levels with inflammatory proteins. Seeing how inflammation is connected to heart disease, strokes, diabetes, arthritis and increased aging, there is reason to believe that a lack of sleep could lead to any of these negative outcomes.
Sleep Improves Your Love Life
A lack of sleep has several physical and psychological ramification, as we’ve discussed already. One last thing to consider with regards to the importance of sleep, is it’s ability to improve your love life and make your relationships happier. Sexually speaking, if you are not getting enough sleep you will not have the energy or desire to perform. In fact, 26% of people say that their sex life is negatively impacted by their sleepiness. If you are a male it is even worse, a lack of sleep can lower your testosterone levels and decrease your sperm count.
Fun fact: A recent study also shows that sleeping (actually sleeping) with a partner will improve your health! This is especially the case if you cuddle ;)
Are you sleeping on sleep? If you are someone who feels like they just don’t have enough time to get the required 7-8 hours of sleep then you need to strongly reconsider your priorities. Sleep is a neglected aspect of many people’s lives; but as you can see above, the health benefits of getting sleep and the health risks of not getting enough sleep are severe!
